• The 'BloomBox' is a natural planter; an innovative circular flower and plant container that actually adds nature to its surroundings and becomes part of the ecosystem. It is easy to move, allowing multiple containers to be arranged as desired. This contributes to greening, biodiversity, and climate adaptation in the built environment. This initiative stems from the need to make cities greener, more social, and more resilient amidst the challenges of urbanization and climate change.

• The 'BloomBox' is designed for everyone who wants to sustainably green spaces where planting in the ground is not possible. It offers them the opportunity to brighten and flexibly arrange their environment while providing ecological benefits.

• INNOVATION:

• The 'BloomBox' makes a holistic contribution to society. Firstly, native, perennial plants create a beautiful, low-maintenance appearance throughout all seasons and promote biodiversity. Secondly, the water buffer stores rainwater, relieving pressure on the sewer system and preventing waterlogging. The integrated passive water system allows plants to drink naturally from this, saving water and simplifying maintenance. Thirdly, multiple containers can easily be connected like Lego blocks via the modular system, enabling various arrangements at different locations. Fourthly, it is a high-quality circular product made from low-grade local recycled plastic waste, which sequesters CO2 and contributes to the sustainable reduction of the greenhouse effect. Lastly, a specially developed social and cost-efficient maintenance system fosters greater social cohesion and keeps public spaces cleaner.

• APPROACH:

• In 2021, we started this project because entrepreneurs on the Nieuwe Binnenweg wanted to make the street greener and more attractive. Urban activities damage ground-level plants; therefore, we developed a container that can be placed in the public space on the tree grates. Since 2022, 16 prototype containers have been successfully installed on the Binnenweg. Together with CityLab, we aim to make the product more affordable by industrializing production, making it accessible to a broader audience. This way, we can create a positive impact at as many locations as possible.

• ArchiNatuur is a Rotterdam-based company located in BlueCity. We advocate for a built environment that harmoniously works with nature to meet human needs. Florian Nelemans is the founder; he is an architect and sustainability expert, graduated from TU Delft. With five years of experience as an independent entrepreneur, he specializes in sustainable architecture and innovative designs. 'BloomBox' is the result of his passion for creating solutions that positively contribute to life on Earth in every aspect. Through collaborations with local businesses and the municipality, we are convinced that together we can make Rotterdam more sustainable and have a positive impact on our living environment.
