  • Constructed after World War II, the terraced houses designed by Brakel and Buma architects in 1955 feature an innovative layout that maximizes sunlight and creates bright, airy interiors. The unique arrangement, characterized by a reversed stamp design, positions one front door on one street and the next on the opposite side. This configuration fosters an engaging urban fabric, activating both sides of the building block and enhancing social interaction.

  • This renovation project in Haarlem addressed several critical issues regarding the property's condition and the client's desires. Over the years, the house had fallen into disrepair, exacerbated by poor choices made by past contractors. The existing garden gate was not only impractical and rotting but also obstructed the view of unsightly bins. The fa̧cade showed signs of age and decay, including multiple water-related issues due to inadequate detailing, leading to deteriorated window frames, shattered sills from previous sandblasting, and unattractive paint that detracted from the overall aesthetic.

  • The goal was to tackle these problems with a targeted approach. Rather than a complete overhaul, we focused on resolving genuine issues, allowing us to allocate resources toward a few lasting solutions that emphasize beauty and sustainability.

  • Bontelaan Exterior
  • We began with a detailed assessment of the fa̧cade, identifying defects through careful examinations while considering the practical usage of the garden gate and bins. We synthesized this research with the client's wishes to create a comprehensive design.

  • The new garden gate serves as a high-end, social entrance, incorporating designated spaces for garbage storage and access to the underground water supply, along with an integrated mailbox. Constructed on a concrete foundation for stability and longevity, the frame is made from solid European oak, ensuring durability. The gate features thermally modified Fraké noir with elegant brass details that harmonize beautifully.

  • The gate includes a lower compartment that can be securely closed to keep pets contained while maintaining a connection to the street. An ingenious mailbox system offers an aesthetic solution for mail storage, featuring a brass slot and a concealed compartment. Additionally, the design incorporates a storage area for bins, discreetly screened by a Fraké gate, effectively enhancing the garden's visual appeal and sense of space.

  • To address water-related issues and enhance longevity, we focused on meticulous details. The second-floor fa̧cade, previously home to an ill-constructed balcony, required redesign. We elevated the lead at the base to prevent water splashing onto the wooden fa̧cade and integrated a small green roof to efficiently manage collected water.

  • Previously, the fa̧cade lacked proper insulation, and inadequate internal construction had caused structural sagging in window frames. We implemented a new construction with calculated insulation solutions to address these challenges. An aesthetic choice of upright wooden slats created a refined visual, integrating leftover materials while applying the same dark wood and brass-toned screws for a calm cohesion throughout the project.

  • On the rear fa̧cade, damaged window sills were replaced with aluminum covers, offering a modern look and resolving prior issues in one elegant solution. Comprehensive painting and rot recovery work were completed to not only beautify the property but also ensure its resilience for decades to come. The meticulous removal of paint from the front fa̧cade's inner edge was achieved through a three-day grinding process, restoring the integrity of the original brick joints.

  • Throughout the building process, we employed an innovative approach aimed at minimizing disruption for the clients while maximizing value. The project was divided into distinct phases: the garage, the higher front fa̧cade, the rear fa̧cade, and the garden gate.

  • The transformation of the garage was particularly noteworthy, utilizing 100% reused materials and furniture, showcasing our commitment to sustainability. This strategy allowed us to operate efficiently on-site without the need for an expensive construction site hut.

  • Bontelaan Exterior
  • Preparation for each phase was conducted in advance at my workshop, ensuring that installation on-site would take minimal time. We carefully coordinated building schedules with the clients, who temporarily relocated to their beach house or went on holiday. This arrangement enabled us to work extended hours without incurring additional transportation costs, ultimately enhancing the quality of the project.

  • While it is not always feasible for clients to vacate their homes, I am always open to discussing flexible arrangements that promote efficiency and value. Creative solutions can lead to greater overall project satisfaction and success.

  • Bontelaan Exterior
  • Through dedication, cooperation, and passion, we transformed the least appealing exterior on the street into the most beautiful one. We accomplished this while preserving its original character to maintain the existing biodiversity that enriches the area.
