A local store 'Het Derde Servies ' offers some exquisite crockery. The store desired a more natural and attractive street-face. Due to the rough and busy character of street, I proposed to design a sustainable planter. Hereby the vegetation is raised and thereby protected. In the design phase (in corporation with the municipality) a first prototype was developed. At the moment 4 planters are being tested in a pilot-program, expected to last one year. When the desired results are gathered, the goal is to create the first street with a planter around every tree. This is in line with the municipalities vision of unity on the public realm.
-
For this project the planter is located on top of the embedded soil and around the tree to save space. In order to be flexible, a modular design was used. One planter is constructed out of four modules, so that these can be taken apart when a tree needs to be cut down. The modular design is flexible and can also be used for other purposes, in different locations and several directions.
-
The modules are made of locally recycled plastic waste from household. The material is light, water repellent and sustainable. When a module breaks it gets recycled into a new one, making it circular. In the leg of the box an integrated water buffer supplies the plants in dryer times with an innovative system to raise the water. Underneath the planter shadow plants cover the soil around the tree and intensify the vegetation. On top, a diversity of biological plants create a beautiful scenery for every season. Flowers stimulate biodiversity and contribute to the atmosphere of an attractive shopping street.
