A surplus of Nitrogen has a bad effect on the quality of our soil, water, and nature. The agricultural sector contributes 46% to this pollution in Holland. The government has come up with a plan to counteract this effect, only after having being forced to do so by a lawsuit. Farmers around Natura 2000 areas are able to sell their companies to the government. Although what is the prospect for farmers in this approach and what will happen with the monopolized land? In my opinion it would be better to invest the money (that would have been used to purchase these properties) into the sustainable transformation of these companies. One of the ideas is to create a food forest; planted, maintained and harvested by farmers.
